Junya Watanabe – The Visionary Heir of Comme des Garçons

Born in 1961, Junya Watanabe joined Comme des Garçons in 1984 after studying at Bunka Fashion College. A protégé of Rei Kawakubo, he founded his own line, Junya Watanabe Comme des Garçons, in 1992. True to the house's avant-garde spirit, he developed a unique approach, combining textile experimentation, architectural precision, and bold collaborations.

Known for his innovative use of technical materials and his mastery of patchwork and layering, Watanabe continually explores the boundaries between couture, workwear, and functional clothing. His Parisian shows are distinguished by an extreme formal exploration that is both conceptual and wearable.

Today, Junya Watanabe is considered one of the most influential designers of his generation, extending Kawakubo's legacy while establishing his own unique style. His Made in Japan pieces, particularly those from the 1990s–2000s, are highly sought-after in high-end secondhand and Japanese fashion archives. They illustrate Japan's unique ability to combine avant-garde, craftsmanship, and innovation.
